Stipendium Berliinis
EUROPEAN JOURNALISM FELLOWSHIPS in BERLIN

Journalists from across Europe and the United States are now invited to apply for the journalism fellowships of the Journalisten-Kolleg at the Freie Universitaet Berlin, which are being offered this year for the fourth time. Participants receive the opportunity to take a leave of absence from their professional positions for two semesters to spend one sabbatical year at the Freie Universitaet Berlin in the pursuit of knowledge and major research projects. At the same time, the programme provides the opportunity to engage in intensive networking with professional colleagues from eastern and western Europe and the United States.

The programme starts in October 2002 and ends in July 2003. Highly qualified journalists, in both full and freelance employment, with several years of professional experience are entitled to apply. The most important element of the application is an exposé for a scientific-journalistic project, which is to be pursued in Berlin. Depending on the level of professional experience, the European Journalism Fellowships are endowed with the monthly payment of DM 1700,-, DM 3000,- or DM 5000,- for the duration of ten months. In addition, foreign participants are invited to take part in a one-week information trip through Germany.

In the past three years, journalists from well-known newspapers, TV and radio stations in Hungary, Russia, Bulgaria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Yugoslavia, the Baltic states, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Iceland, the Netherlands, the United States, and Germany have been awarded with European Journalism Fellowships. Renowned media companies, firms and foundations fund the program, including the Fazit Foundation of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, the Karl-Gerold Foundation (Frankfurter Rundschau), the Siemens AG, the Volkswagen AG, the Haniel Foundation, the Preussische Seehandlung Foundation and the Foundation Brandenburger Tor (Bankgesellschaft Berlin).

The closing date for applications is October 31, 2001.
