11.00 – 11.20 Introduction. What do we mean by data, open data, what are people already doing with it? Examples

11.20 – 12.00  Where to find data: sources, good googling, tips and tricks, basic "scraping"

12.00 – 12.15 The key skills of data analysis, or "interviewing your data": sorting, filtering, pivoting. Exercises

12.45 – 13.15  Lunch break 

13.15 – 14.00 Cleaning data. What might be dirty, how to clean it. Intro to OpenRefine as a free tool

(If participants want to install this in advance they can follow along they should visit OpenRefine.org and download, install, and test the appropriate package - windows, mac, linux)

14.00 – 14.30  Visualisation tools. Why visualisations are useful, how to make them quickly and simply. Turning your data into a story - mixture of discussion and presentation and practical

14.30 – 16.00  Final discussion - what next, tips, reading, suggested further (self-)training.
