On behalf of the World Press Photo Foundation, congratulations
on your selection and welcome to the program! The coming year is
going to be an exciting and inspiring time and I look forward to
meeting you and to the discussions, exchanging of ideas and eventually
towards the results this workshop series is sure to produce.
Over the past few months World Press Photo worked in close cooperation
with Lietuvos Zurnalistikos Centras (Renita Paleckiene), the Latvian
Media Professionals Training Center (Anita Kehre) and with the Estonian
Media Center (Taimi Kalvet). Together we have been preparing the
program, arranging the logistics and inviting the tutors who will
join us in Vilnius. Attached please find the program.
Regarding preparations for the workshop please take careful note
of the following;
- Please note carefully that you are personally responsible for
the purchase of any insurance, which may be necessary in respect
of any loss, injury, or accident occurring during the period of
travel.
- In the coming week, please think carefully what you hope to
achieve/learn during the workshops. This is important so that
we can tailor the seminar to the needs and wishes of the group.
- During the workshop you will be spending a day shooting an assignment.
It is important that you bring along your own camera and equipment
for this. Film and development will be taken care of locally.
- The theme for the days assignment will be 'Young People at risk'.
Please think about what this means to you and what could be topics
you could take pictures of.
- Don't forget your portfolio. The tutors will use it to review
and discuss your work. Your portfolio is a general overview of
your best work that contains no more than 30 press photography
images. If possible include 2 stories (max. 12 images per story)
and 6 single images. If you only have single images please put
together a portfolio of no more than 20 images. Note that it is
important that your portfolio must allow an easy review of your
work and is presented in a professional manner (if possible make
good prints).
- Please also select one image from your portfolio, which you
believe tells something about your vision on photography and formulate
why this is the case. On Saturday morning you will be need this
to introduce your self to your fellow participants.
It is with great pleasure that I am able to inform you that Colin
Jacobson (UK) and Alain Keler (Fr) will be joining us as tutors.
Attached you will find their biographies. Beside myself, Ms Irina
van der Sluis from the World Press Photo Foundation will also be

The World Press Photo Baltic 2001-2002 Workshop is intended for
15 professional photojournalists from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
The candidates were selected by national selection committees in
each of these countries.
The workshop will last 6 days in 2001: 7 September till 12 September,
and in the same period another 6 days in 2002. The program is supported
by Soros and the European Culture Foundation.
The goals of the workshop are;
- to absorb new information about the priorities and agendas in
terms of the range of public issues and concerns that people in
the region are dealing with.
- to assess the extent to which the public issues and concerns are
being satisfied by both the general level of photographic expertise
in the respective countries and the own particular work in this
area.
- to examine subject areas and new ways in which photographs will
have more impact, comparing different photographic techniques and
styles from established journals, examples and case studies.
- to work with communities (through field opportunities) allowing
for the investigation of the resource inputs and for the practice
and the development of skills necessary to improve the generation
of pictures through personal photographic work and ideas.
- to examine the way in which the photograph gets onto the printed
page and performs its role of communicating a message to its audience.
This reflects the reality that new technology is rapidly penetrating
media institutions within the Baltic republics, changing production
methods.
In September 2002 an exhibition of the work produced during the
assignemt period (September 2001-September 2002) will be organized.
The theme of the assignment is ‘Young people at risk’. The exhibition
and the catalogue will be
